Dear Students,

Welcome back to campus!

As you settle into campus life this fall, consider that most of the music,
shows, and movies that are widely distributed are copyrighted and each of
us needs to respect the rights of all creators. When downloading or
accessing media content online, take care that you are using legal sources,
such as services from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Disney, Apple, HBO, and
Google. Peer-to-peer file sharing may seem like an easy way to watch a
movie or listen to a song for free, but it is illegal
<https://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-digital.html#p2p> and any
violation, no matter how insignificant it may seem to you, may carry
significant consequences.

Beloiters have access to many sources of free and legal content including
several film services <https://guides.beloit.edu/az.php?t=6394> available
through Morse Library and a curated, diverse collection of vinyl LPs with a
bluetooth-compatible turntable in the library’s Powerhouse location! There
are many additional free, advertisement supported, and paid services
<https://www.educause.edu/focus-areas-and-initiatives/policy-and-security/educause-policy/legal-sources-online>
to access your favorite content.

To learn more about copyright law, please visit
https://guides.beloit.edu/copyright. If you are unsure about whether a
media source is legal or not, LITS staff are happy to help you
<https://www.beloit.edu/lits/library/ask-a-librarian/>.

Have a great fall semester!
